ITS OVER!
At approximately 12:30 PM on Sunday I crossed the finish line of the Sierra West Cabins finish line located approximately 15 KM north of Lundbreck on Highway 22. It was the conclusion of an 89 km ride up some very long and big hills into a significant wind. Although the folks from Pincher Creek will tell you that it was just a gentle breeze...when you are climbing a 4 km hill into that wind...it was tough. When you still have to pedal DOWN the hill...it was howling pretty good.
But I make it sound worse than it was. Although the second day was more difficult by a significant margin, Day 1 could not have been more perfect. From the opening ceremonies with some touching stories, including the grand march of a riderless bike commemorating all those that lost the battle, to the fantastic support from the Calgary City Police who gave us full right of way down 22x to the junction of Hwy 22 when we turned south to Longview, to the volunteers who kept the food and water coming at the rest stops and also set up the camp, to the entertainment in the camp...it was a perfect day. The wind was light and the group was pumped...you just fed off the energy.
1742 riders who had raised $6.9 million departed the Deerfoot Inn Casino at approximately 8 am on Sat on the Road to Conquer Cancer. I managed to finish the first 103 km on day 1 in 3 hrs 44 mins and the 89 kms on day 2 in 4 hrs 15 min but that pales in comparison to some of the effort and dedication I saw in some of the riders. One in particular stands out.... the last rider on day 1 arrived at camp after 10 hrs on the course. She was escorted by two staff members and she crossed the line in tears. I don't know if they were tears of joy or pain but her effort was amazing. Clearly she was not an experienced rider but SHE PUT HERSELF OUT THERE and I shall never forget her face when she finished. Memories like that are truly priceless.
So as I close this down for this year, I would once again like to thank you for your support and the good wishes you sent. It definitely helped me deal with the strong winds and stay motivated toward the end. I pray that none of us ever have to deal with this terrible disease but should that not come to pass, I hope the efforts we have collectively made on this Ride will bear positive fruit in some meaningful way.
All the best to all of you! Take care! Mike

Strike Team Shines in Local Community!
Over the summer months, workers at the Shell Waterton Optimization Project signed on for a Wednesday night slow-pitch league to have some fun and support the local community. There were six teams formed from Shell, Jacobs, local companies and site contractors. At each game the players held 50/50 draws and had prize raffles to raise money for some local charities. The prizes were donated by contractors and suppliers, as well as cash donations to fund the end of the year BBQ for the teams. When all was said and done, approximately $8,800 dollars were raised and split between four local charities ($2900 each). Please refer to the articles, quotes and photos below for more information.
